California
Coastline Survey Project:
The goal of this program is to survey and detect sources of illegal
toxic pollution along the California coastline. Once the source has
been located it will be reported to the proper government enforcement
agency in that region. This is a comprehensive 48 month project to test
and report findings from each outflow discharging into California Coastal
waters. A survey vessel will be used to take samples at ½ mile
intervals and take samples from each visible outflow. Samples will be
tested for bacteria and pollutants including pesticides. We will also
map all outflows and record land use for public information and future
projects.
Cruise
Ship Monitoring Program:
The cruise ship industry has been fined continuously for illegally discharging
its waste. Three years ago cruise ships starting adding Monterey, CA
to their destinations offered and since then cruise ship visits have
become a regular event. The Aquatic Protection Agency is there, monitoring
cruise ships for illegal discharges both visually and taking water samples
on regular intervals throughout their stay. Our presence is not intended
to catch them discharging. Our presence is there to prevent a potential
discharge. The Aquatic Protection Agency is the first organization to
ever successfully monitor a moving cruise vessel. We hope to extend
this program to all ports in California visited by cruise vessels.
Point
Source Investigations Program:
The Aquatic Protection Agency monitors water quality and tests outfalls
for illegal toxic pollution. These are spot tests that come from random
reports by concerned citizens, government officials, or target sites
established by APA staff members.
BlueWater
Education Program:
The BlueWater Education Program includes the BlueBoater and BlueMarina
campaigns to train boaters and marinas to minimize their impact on the
environment.
BlueBoater is a training program in which we walk the docks of local
marinas training boaters on proper maintenance and fluids storage. We
will, if requested, physically hop into their engine compartments and
examine their systems and make recommendations for updates. This program
includes regional training classes for boaters on how they can improve
their maintenance and reduce impacts on the environment. “Don’t
Pull the Plug” is a campaign directed at trailerable boaters who
pull their transom or “bailer” plugs on the boat ramp, and
leak that bilge oil right back into the marina.
The BlueMarina program is designed to reduce oil contamination within
marinas by monitoring for oil contamination and training marina staff
on-site on improved procedures for reducing contamination as part of
their normal operating procedures.
BlueBoater
Training Program:
The Aquatic Protection Agency is giving a free presentation for
mariners
on how to maintain your vessel while minimizing your affect on
the environment.
