KEEP OCEANS BLUE 2006

Our event was held at the Monterey Bay Aquarium in the Outer Bay wing, which includes the Jellyfish exhibits,
on Friday, April 21st, 2006 7-9PM.

It was a great night. Everyone enjoyed themselves, and the adjectives used to describe Keep Oceans Blue were “elegant,” “classy,” and “wonderful.” The food was fantastic, guest speakers were entertaining as well as educational, and you can’t beat the Monterey Bay Aquarium as the perfect venue to appreciate protection of our oceans.

A special surprise awaited our 2006 Oceans Heroes. Congressman Sam Farr bestowed upon the honorees a special Congressional Recognition on top of our Oceans Heroes Award. This years oceans heroes were:

Kaitilin Gaffney
Kumi Ishida
Warner Chabot
Jesus Ruiz
Milos Radacovich
Congressman Sam Farr

Jimmy Chickenpants entertained the crowd with a bit of Santa Cruz Bluegrass. Sean Van Sommeran gave a thoughtful speech about respecting our precious ocean resources, and Charles Mehlert gave us all a little history lesson about how close we came to losing Ano Nuevo to commercialization.

All of our 2006 Kids Corner Art Contest Winners were there. The winners are:

1 st place- Da-Lan Pham – for her sculptures of marine life – 2 tickets to Marine World
2 nd place- Chelsea Young – her poem “the color of our bay”– 2 tickets to Great America
3 rd place- Cassidy Phillips – her picture “sea in conflict” – 2 tickets to Bonfante Gardens

The parents really appreciated the day care center we set up. This way our adult attendees did not have to hire a babysitter, they brought their kids to the event, and we had volunteers playing with the kids. We kept them fed with snacks and juice boxes, and we officially released our first coloring book at the event to keep them busy.

We would love to make this an annual event. If you, or a group you work with would like to team up with us to put on Keep Oceans Blue 2007 please let me know. We won’t start planning until November, so you don’t need to commit right away. Just let me know if you have any interest.
